Touch Technology Leader Demonstrates New Capabilities at COMDEX
Elo TouchSystems, the world leader in touch technology, previewed at COMDEX® several new technologies and capabilities demonstrating continued technology innovation that it will make available over the next year.
“Elo is the world leader in providing innovative solutions that enable people to interact more easily with computers,” said Pat Brogan, vice president of sales and marketing. “Touch is the most intuitive way for people to interact with computers. Elo’s new offerings over the next year will simplify that interaction.”
Universal Serial Bus Compatibility
At COMDEX, Elo is demonstrating its implementation of the universal serial bus (USB), a major initiative supported by Microsoft, Intel, IBM and others, that allows multiple peripherals to connect easily to PCs through a standard interface. This provides “plug and play” capabilities for Elo touchscreens.
Larger Touchscreens
Elo TouchSystems has broken technology barriers that have previously limited touchscreens to 21-inch sizes. This will enable applications such as retail kiosks to use larger displays to attract more customers.
At COMDEX, Elo TouchSystems demonstrated a 31-inch diagonal flat touchscreen with rear projection. This technology can be used to enable applications such as electronic teleconferencing whiteboards, which will simplify meetings and video teleconferencing.
“These larger touchscreens are also ideal for process control, kiosk, and other applications where larger size eases use, or where it is desirable to display large amounts of information,” said Mike Lewis, IntelliTouch product marketing manager.
Signature Capture for Kiosk Applications
A new signature capture solution designed specifically for kiosk applications transforms point-of-information (POI) kiosks into transaction kiosks that enable customers to sign documents such as contracts and credit applications. The signature capture pad is also more comfortable for kiosk users, who can sign their names on a horizontal surface as opposed to the vertical surface of the touchscreen.
This solution will also lower costs for retailers, bankers, government agencies and others, who must track and store large numbers of transaction signatures, by eliminating the need for paper storage.
Web Browser
Elo also previewed its latest Internet/Intranet software, which touch-optimizes the two most popular Web browsers, Netscape Navigator 3.0™ and Microsoft Explorer 3.0™. Elo’s Web browser software was developed by Dave Heyliger of Rocky Mountain Multimedia.
“Touch-enabled browsers make it significantly easier for non-technical users to access and use the Web,” said Lewis. “For example, a company might install a kiosk in its lobby that would enable employees, visitors and others to access its Web site quickly and easily.”
Elo’s Internet software offers kiosk designers features that simplify touch programming and provide easy customization of function buttons for activation by finger or stylus. Access can be limited to specific sites. A virtual touch keyboard simplifies data entry.
According to Lewis, these are but a few of the technical innovations that Elo TouchSystems will deliver to its customers over the next year.
“These capabilities and technologies demonstrate Elo’s ongoing commitment to simplifying touch use for the public and for those who develop touch applications,” said Lewis.
